In the beginning, my relationship with yoni eggs was as a rocky one. Ordering the thing was magical, as retail therapy usually is, and I spent the better part of a week obsessively checking the tracking information, writhing in anticipation for the arrival of my new best friend. When the package finally came, I ripped it open, and there she was. A beautiful, shiny, black obsidian yoni egg. 

At the time, my understanding of yoni eggs was was limited to a middle-of-the-night YouTube binge that left me with the general impression that yoni eggs had the magical power to instantly transform me into a sex goddess that could dangle surfboards and heavy, exotic fruit from my hoo-ha.  

You can imagine my disappointment when about two minutes after ushering my not-so-little friend into the holy of holies, I could no longer feel it. I squeezed as hard as I could, veins bulging from my forehead. Nothing. I squeezed harder (or so I imagined), and little beads of sweat emerged on my upper lip. Still, I couldn't feel it. After about ten minutes of this arduous struggle, I arrived at a conclusion:

My vagina was broken. 

Lucky for you, I didn't quit, but delved into the practice more, and I'm here to let you know-- there's a light at the end of the tunnel. 

If you are starting out in your yoni egg practice, and have trouble feeling your egg after a while, here's what's happening. 

Even though a PC muscle may strong enough and tight enough to hold the egg in place for hours at a time, many women are unable to feel the yoni egg move up as they contract around it due to lost sensitivity in the vagina. This happens naturally over a lifetime, especially if you've given birth.

The PC muscle is like any other muscle in the body, and if you don't use it, it will atrophy over time. Eventually, this can lead to all sorts of problems- lack of sex drive, inability to orgasm, incontinence, or even a vaginal/uterine prolapse.

And unfortunately for our lady lips, a general numbness. 

In a nutshell: when a muscle atrophies, it loses sensitivity. Depending on how weak your PC muscle is, it might even feel that although you are trying as hard as you can to contract it, like theres a disconnect between your brain and your body, and you have no control over the latter.

This is all perfectly normal. And, with a commitment and consistency, it can change.

As your PC becomes stronger and tighter, it also will also become more sensitive, making for better sex, harder orgasms, and less of a chance that you'll spring a leak the next time you decide to jump on a trampoline, or laugh so hard that organic chocolate almond milk shoots out your nose. (Or, in my case, Delirium Tremens, my preferred poison.)

So how do we get from point A (not feeling a damn thing) to point B (having multiple mind-blowing orgasms and a superhuman, all-powerful, magical vagina)?

Baby Steps. 

Here's an exercise to get you started. 

Inhale, contract your PC muscle, and imagine your egg moving up. Hold it for several seconds, and as you exhale, relax your PC muscle, and imagine the egg moving back down. Don't push it out, just relax the muscle. Continue doing this for as long as you can. 

When you are squeezing your egg for dear life and have no idea what it's actually up to in there, visualize it moving up, and eventually it will assist you in doing so. This will help to reforge a connection between your mind and body, while tightening, toning, and strengthening your pelvic floor. This is basically a mindful meditation. But, for those of you who are results oriented, you can think of it as an exercise with tangible results. 

If you are just starting out in your practice, 200 contractions throughout the day will be enough to make major changes in both your anatomy and your sensitivity, and you should feel results within a week or two.

The worst thing you can possibly do in this practice is judge yourself. If you find your inner critic piping up, refocus your attention on your breath. Many women, including myself, find it really helpful to count your contractions. Start off with a low number, say, 10. (I know it sounds like nothing at all, but you might be surprised at how easy it is to get distracted) Once you can do ten contractions, try 20, and so on.
